The meeting of the East Carroll Parish School Board was held Tuesday, May 4, 1999 at 7:30 p.m. in the Boardroom of the School Board Office.

 

Member(s) present: Mr. Ralph Coleman, Mrs. Evangelia Fields, Mr. Glenn Dixon, Mrs. Fannie Hawkins, Mrs. Georjean Jackson, Reverend Michael Owens, Reverend Tommy McKeel, Mr. Buford Perry

 

Member(s) absent: Mr. Gene Edmondson

 

The meeting was called to order by the President, Mrs. Georjean Jackson and visitors were welcomed.

 

Invocation was given by Reverend Michael Owens

 

Mr. Buford Perry moved, seconded by Reverend Michael Owens that the minutes of the regular meeting of April 6, 1999 be adopted as written.

Reverend Michael Owens moved, seconded by Mr. Ralph Coleman that Mr. Mark Buntyn, representative of Louisiana Delta Bank be allow to talk to teachers about the services offered by Louisiana Delta Bank.  It was furthered stipulated that a credit union be established for East Carroll Parish School System.

Reverend Michael Owens moved, seconded by Mr. Glenn Dixon that the Banner Democrat be the Official Journal for the East Carroll Parish School Board as described in the following bid recap.

The Superintendent announced that the salary supplement would be $1200.00.

 

Copies of the proposed Special Education application was disseminated to Board Members for review with action to be taken in the regular meeting of June 1, 1999.

 

The President, Mrs. Georjean Jackson yielded in favor of Mr. Charles Dale, an insurance claim public adjuster with Jansen & Company who discussed how he could help maximize the School Board’s recovery amount on the fire lost at Southside Elementary.

 

Mr. Glenn Dixon moved, seconded by Reverend Tommy McKeel to retain Jansen & Company as their private claim adjuster at 6% of the amount of the damages recovered.

The Superintendent, Mr. Marrage Facen gave the Board an update on Southside Elementary.  He mention that cleaning the building was just about complete. Lights were being put in the hall and ceiling tile was being replaced.

 

Mr. Facen stated that school would open Monday, May 10, 1999 if the renovations meets the fire marshall inspection requirements.  He also said that days missed due to the fire would have to be made up.  Starting May 10, 1999 classes will be held from 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. daily on Monday-Friday.  Beginning Saturday, May 15, 1999, classes will be held from 7:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m each Saturday.  Closing dates for other schools in the parish will be May 27, 1999. Southside will close Monday, May 31, 1999.

 

Mr. Buford Perry moved, seconded by Reverend Michael Owens to add the following items to the agenda. 

 

            1.         Lake Providence Jr. High (Termite Problem)

            2.         Rural Development Resolution

 

Mr. Facen said he would take immediate action on the termite problem

 

Reverend Michael Owens moved, seconded by Mr. Buford Perry that the Board support a resolution stating that the ”r;East Carroll Parish School Board will be the sponsoring agent for a rural development grant for Transylvania Elementary and Monticello High School.”
