School Board Meeting

July 3, 2007

 

The regular meeting of the East Carroll Parish School Board was held Tuesday, July 3 2007 beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Boardroom of the School Board Office.

 

Member(s) present:  Mr. Glenn Dixon, Mr. Gene Edmondson, Rev. Tommy McKeel, Mrs. Fannie Hawkins, Mrs. Harriet Bridges, Mr. Ralph Coleman, Mr. Roger Shoemaker, and Mrs. Georjean Jackson.

 

Member(s) absent:  Mrs. Evangelia Fields.

 

The meeting was called to order by the president, Mr. Glenn Dixon.  Invocation was offered by Rev. Tommy McKeel, and Mr. Glenn Dixon led the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

Mr. Gene Edmondson moved, seconded by Mr. Ralph Coleman to approve the minutes of the regular June 5, 2007 meeting and the June 22nd-23rd School Board Retreat.

 

MOTION PASSED

 

There were no requests for Use of Facilities.

 

Mrs. Betty King and Mr. Brian Blockwood were recognized as Employees of the Month by the East Carroll Parish School Board and the Gladney Insurance Agency.

 

Mr. Ralph Coleman moved, seconded by Mrs. Harriet Bridges to accept the resignation for retirement of Mr. Earl Webb, teacher, Monticello High School.

 

MOTION PASSED

 

Mr. Ralph Coleman moved, seconded by Mrs. Georjean Jackson to accept the following resignations:

 

                        Mrs. Susan Smith, teacher - Monticello High School,

                        Mr. Hamilton Brock, principal - Monticello High School; and,

                        Mr. Eugene Milton, teacher - Lake Providence Jr. High School.

Rev. Tommy McKeel moved, seconded by Mr. Ralph Coleman to employ Mr. Damien Brown as Girls’ Basketball Coach for the Lake Providence Sr. High School.

Mrs. Georjean Jackson moved, seconded by Mr. Ralph Coleman to employ Mr. Joel Hawkins as Boys’ Head Basketball Coach for Lake Providence Sr. High School.

 

MOTION PASSED

 

Rev. Tommy McKeel moved, seconded by Mr. Ralph Coleman to employ Ms. Pamela Blockwood as secretary for the Lake Providence Jr. High School.

 

MOTION PASSED

 

Mrs. Georjean Jackson moved, seconded by Mrs. Fannie Hawkins to authorize the superintendent of schools to advertise for a principal and assistant principal.

John Daugherty of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship reported to the Board that the CBF would participate in the annual ”Back to School Health Fair” scheduled for August 4, 2007 at the DEED Center, Lake Providence.  Book bags will be distributed to students who participate in the Health Fair. CBF will establish a Junior Master Gardner Program at Southside Elementary and the Lake Providence Jr. High School.

 

Mrs. Harriet Bridges moved, seconded by Mrs. Fannie Hawkins to authorize the Board to donate $250 to the ”Back to School Health Fair”.

The Gladney Insurance Agency pledged to donate $250 to the "Back to School Health Fair".

 

Mr. Gene Edmondson moved, seconded by Mr. Ralph Coleman to adopt a resolution in support of House Bill 648 which referenced Reauthorization of NCLB.

 

MOTION PASSED

 

The following policies were given to board members for adoption consideration at the August, 2007 meeting:

 

                        A.  Public Comment; and,

                        B.  School System Organization Plan.

 

Mr. Gene Edmondson moved, seconded by Rev. Tommy McKeel to join with the LSU Agriculture Center to sponsor and implement a child nutrition program (Body Walk) in East Carroll District schools.

Mrs. Georjean Jackson moved, seconded by Mr. Roger Shoemaker to authorize the superintendent of schools to receive fence bids for Lake Providence Jr. High School and Southside Elementary School.

 

MOTION PASSED

 

Mr. Gene Edmondson moved, seconded by Mr. Ralph Coleman to accept the bid of Homeland Safety Company of Shreveport, LA for $76,416 for surveillance cameras. The cameras will be placed at Lake Providence Jr. High School, Monticello High School and the Lake Providence Sr. High School provided they meet advertisement specifications.

Mr. Gene Edmondson moved, seconded by Mr. Roger Shoemaker to accept a bid of $400 for a 1981 (65) passenger International school bus from Mrs. Jeanette Davis provided the bid met with the approval of the School Board’s attorney.
