School Board Meeting

July 1, 2008

 

The regular meeting of the East Carroll Parish School Board was held Tuesday, July 1, 2008 beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Boardroom of the School Board Office.

 

Member(s) present:  Mr. Glenn Dixon, Mr. Gene Edmondson, Rev. Tommy McKeel, Mrs. Fannie Hawkins, Mrs. Harriet Bridges, Mr. Ralph Coleman, Mr. Roger Shoemaker and Mrs. Georjean Jackson.

 

Member(s) absent:  Mrs. Evangelia Fields.

 

The meeting was called to order by Mr. Glenn Dixon, president.  Invocation was offered by Rev. Tommy McKeel; and, Mr. Glenn Dixon led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

 

Mr. Gene Edmondson moved, seconded by Mr. Roger Shoemaker to approve the minutes of the June 3, 2008 board meeting.

 

MOTION PASSED

 

Mrs. Fannie Hawkins moved, seconded by Mrs. Harriet Bridges to approve the following use of school facilities requests:

 

1.  Southside Elementary cafeteria on August 24, 2008 for a wedding reception.

 

2.  The use of a bus to transport students to the High Delta Safari Park at Delhi, Louisiana on August 8, 2008.

Mr. Gene Edmondson moved, seconded by Mrs. Fannie Hawkins to accept the resignation of Mrs. Sylvia Armstrong, teacher-Monticello High School.

Mr. Gene Edmondson moved, seconded by Rev. Tommy McKeel to employ Mr. Reginald Jackson as school psychologist for the East Carroll School District.

Mr. Gene Edmondson moved, seconded by Mrs. Harriet Bridges to employ Mrs. Helen Smith as the principal at the Lake Providence Sr. High School.

Mr. Ralph Coleman moved, seconded by Mrs. Georjean Jackson to approve the district’s Reconstitution Plan for the Lake Providence Jr. High School.

Board members were given the following policies to consider for adoption at the August, 2008 board meeting:

 

      A.  School Census                        E.  Supplemental Educational Services

      B.  Superintendent Qualifications    F.  Student Health Services

      C.  Inventories                               G.  Illness and Accidents

      D.  Administration of Medication

 

Mrs. Georjean Jackson moved, seconded by Mr. Ralph Coleman to donate $300.00 to the Annual Back-to-School Health Fair coordinated by Dr. Camille Perkins.  The fair is scheduled for August 2, 2008 at the DEED Office.

Mr. Gene Edmondson moved, seconded by Mr. Ralph Coleman to give Mr. Leartrice Hawkins permission to recap the Janitorial Bids, take the lowest bid and present it to the board at the August, 2008 meeting.  The following companies submitted bids:  Janitorial Supply of Greenville, Mississippi, Jackson Paper Company of West Monroe, Louisiana and Stuart Irby (unacceptable-not certified).

Mr. Gene Edmondson moved, seconded by Mrs. Fannie Hawkins to reject all bids for driveway repairs at Northside Elementary and Lake Providence Jr. High School; and, resubmit the advertisement.

Mr. Gene Edmondson moved, seconded by Mr. Ralph Coleman to add three items to the agenda.

Mr. Gene Edmondson moved, seconded by Mr. Ralph Coleman to give the superintendent of schools permission to advertise for a principal for Monticello High School and an assistant principal for Lake Providence Sr. High School.

Mrs. Georjean Jackson distributed East Carroll Scholarship Foundation applications to board members and asked that students (public and non-public) be encouraged to apply for the academic scholarships.

 

Dr. Millikin provided the board with an update on the progress of the Alternative Program building citing construction/contractor impasses and fire marshall concerns that will have to be addressed by the proper authorities.

 

Mr. Gene Edmondson moved, seconded by Mr. Ralph Coleman to adjourn the meeting.
