East Carroll Parish

School Board Meeting

February 3, 2009

 

The regular meeting of the East Carroll Parish School Board was held Tuesday, February 3, 2009 beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Boardroom of the School Board Office.

 

Member(s) present:  Mr. Glenn Dixon, Mr. Gene Edmondson, Rev. Tommy McKeel, Mrs. Harriet Bridges, Mr. Ralph Coleman, Mr. Roger Shoemaker, Mrs. Georjean Jackson, and Mrs. Evangelia Fields.

 

Member(s) absent:  Mrs. Fannie Hawkins.

 

The meeting was called to order by the president, Mr. Glenn Dixon.  Invocation was offered by Rev. Tommy McKeel, and Mr. Glenn Dixon led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

 

Mr. Ralph Coleman moved, seconded by Mr. Roger Shoemaker to accept the minutes of the regular meeting of January 7, 2009.

 

MOTION PASSED

 

Mrs. Georjean Jackson thanked Central Office staff and School Board members for cards and condolences during the loss of her mother.

 

Mr. Gene Edmondson moved, seconded by Rev. Tommy McKeel to approve all requests for use of facilities.

 

MOTION PASSED

 

Mrs. Harriet Bridges moved, seconded by Rev. Tommy McKeel to contribute $348.34 ( board’s pro rata share) to hire an attorney to pursue gas tax revenues due the East Carroll School Board by the Memphis based Trunk Line Company.

Mr. Gene Edmondson moved, seconded by Mr. Ralph Coleman to approve the employment of the following persons:

 

            Judith Paitan                 Teacher             Monticello High School

            Ulpiana Lat                    Teacher             Griffin Middle Academy

            Ofelia Labario                Teacher             Lake Providence Sr. High School

            Abigail Villania               Teacher             Griffin Middle Academy

Mrs. Evangelia Fields moved, seconded by Mr. Roger Shoemaker to accept the retirement resignation of Mr. Frank Hawkins, security guard at the Lake Providence Sr. High School; and, general resignation of Mrs. Tracey Bonner - secretary, Northside Elementary School.

Rev. Tommy McKeel moved, seconded by Mr. Gene Edmondson to give Superintendent of Schools permission to advertise for a security guard (POST Certified) for the Lake Providence Senior High School.

Mrs. Georjean Jackson moved, seconded by Mrs. Evangelia Fields to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Louisiana Department of Education for Griffin Middle Academy.

 

MOTION PASSED

 

The board received a program update for Griffin Middle Academy from the principal, Ms. Janice Harris and three students: Kojerion Hawkins, Tierra Lane and Ashunti Chase.

 

Ms. Kris Mayers (Extension Office) presented information on the upcoming 2009 Ag Safety Day events scheduled for February 19th.

 

Mr. Gene Edmondson moved, seconded by Mrs. Evangelia Fields to approve the following district policies:

 

A.  Board Member Continuing Education                          F.  Education of Students with Exceptionalities

B.  School Board Ethics                                                 G.  Computer Access and Use

C.  Buildings and Grounds Security                                 H.  Compulsory School Attendance Ages

D.  Student Transportation Safety Program                       I.    Student Transfer and Withdrawal

E.  Naming of Facilities                                                  J.    Immunizations

 

MOTION PASSED

 

Board members discussed possible dispositions for Transylvania Elementary School.

 

Mr. Gene Edmondson moved, seconded by Mrs. Evangelia Fields to adjourn the meeting.
